What is Mexican Art

Art, as a concept, encompasses all the creations made by human beings to express a sensitive vision of the world, whether real or imaginary. Through plastic, linguistic or sound resources, art allows the expression of ideas, emotions, perceptions, and sensations. Palm, clay, yarn, tree bark, cardboard, grana cochinilla, obsidian, lapislazuli, feathers, and quartz are some of the many varieties of materials used in Mexican art, but art is not just a generic technical concept. For Mexicans, art has been a life jacket. Art is the tireless search for a sense of belonging, the desire to recover our identity and pride. As a result of foreign conquests, Mexicans were forced to put our roots aside, we were taught to believe that our customs, our religion, and our language were not correct. We lost our identity and our sense of entitlement, but, once freed, art was, and continues to be, our greatest fuel.

From the art of the Mesoamerican people, the Teotihuacan stelae, the Olmec heads, New Spanish art, and Mexican muralism, to contemporary artists, Mexican art welcomes modernity with open arms.
