In the heart of La Roma, one of Mexico City’s most vibrant and cosmopolitan neighborhoods, a project comes to life that blends contemporary design, hospitality, and artisan tradition: Kukun Roma. More than just a stylish and comfortable place to stay, this space is deeply connected to one of Mexico’s most cherished cultural expressions—black clay from Oaxaca.

The inspiration behind the design of these apartments in La Roma comes from a deeply personal and uniquely Mexican story. Prince Lauder, the artist behind the collages that decorate Kukun Roma, grew up visiting Oaxaca—walking its streets, meeting its people, and absorbing its history.

That’s where the bond with black clay began—not just as a decorative element, but as an ancestral process full of meaning. The journey to San Bartolo Coyotepec—a town known for its black clay artistry—was more than an aesthetic search; it was a reconnection with a fading legacy of craftsmanship.

Xolos and Clay

Among the standout pieces in the building are sculptures of xolos—mythical dogs from the Mexica and Zapotec traditions. These figures are far more than decoration: they symbolize guidance, protection, and companionship. A mural featuring a xolo family tells a symbolic story of emotional growth, where every shape and texture reflects a different stage of life. The art here isn’t just something to look at—it’s something to feel, to reflect on, to remember.

At Kukun Roma, black clay isn’t just a design element—it’s a narrative. Every piece was made with intention, memory, and the desire to give travelers an experience that’s rich, meaningful, and deeply connected to Mexico. Staying here is about more than comfort—it’s about feeling the soul of Oaxaca in every corner of La Roma.
