During an earthquake, most deaths and injuries result from falling construction materials and heavy objects like bookshelves, cabinets, and heating units.
-Know the safe places in each room where you're staying. A safe spot could be under a sturdy table away from walls, or if you're in bed, under the covers with a pillow over your head.
-Practice an earthquake drill. Participating in a drill will help you and your loved ones understand what to do during an earthquake, even when you're not together.
-Drop immediately to the ground on your hands and knees. This position will prevent you from falling but allows you to move if necessary.
-Cover your head and neck (and your entire body if possible) by getting under a sturdy table or desk. If you're not near shelter, crouch near an interior wall or next to low furniture that won't fall on you, and cover your head and neck with your arms and hands. Try to stay away from windows or glass objects that could break.
We hope you won't experience an earthquake while visiting Mexico City, but if you do, now you know what to do.
